I have an early Toyo Half Plater Field Camera, 5x4 back only,it has a fresnel, but it's extremely fine concentric rings compared to others, so hard to detects.

All 45A cameras were factory fitted with the same fresnel.

If you remove the back and tilt it so you look obliquely, varying the angle, you can just make out the concentric rings. I need to compare my Toyo with my Wista, as I don't think it's as bright, or maybe rather less contrasty. I have a feeling that's down to the acid etched focus screen.

I was just about to take a couple of shots on my phone of how bright my new 300mm f4.5 Xenar is in the screen of my Agfa Ansco 10x8 Commercial view. The phone screen showed a hotspot, but as a viewer there isn't one, there's a good reason why, we see in stereo. I should add the camera has a Beattie Intenscreen, which is very bright anyway.

I went to the pro centre in old street London and rented the Sinaron 90mm mc f4.5 (from research it’s a rodenstock renamed).
It’s definitely Brighter in the centre and edges ever so slight brighter at 4.5. At f4.5 it’s hard to figure out if I have found focus. If I stop down to f8 it is much more easier and contrast is miles stronger. My nikkor 90mm f8 is easy to focus wide open.

Is this normal?

I’ll be testing this weekend but I’m confused with the focusing. At f4.5 it seems bright but lacking contrast to help things pop into focus.
 
I'll have a go at focusing with my 90mm lenses wide open this weekend. It seems I have accumulated both the Nikon 90 SW f4.5 and Rodenstock Grandagon N 90mm f4.5.
I'll let you know if there's any difference.

So finally tracked down the Nikkor 90mm f4.5. The seller was literally a 5min cycle from me. Very happy that I was able to compare against my 90mm f8. For me I don’t think the size difference or weight is that drastic. It’s a big difference in ground glass brightness indoors I must say. Very happy with purchase.

I can say this adventure is now closed. Cheers for everyone’s input and advice. I’ll be moving on the nikkor 90mm f8 so I’ll be posting it in the classifieds shortly. I’ve also decided to sell my sekonic L558 and purchase the Pentax digital spotmeter and the sekonic L358 for flash and studio work as the incident metering and functions are the same as the L558.
