Wista ground glass question.

I went out today to the same spot and it was miles easier to focus due to ever so slightly more open shadows.

I took three shots then went to check out some FUJINON lenses. I tried the 105mm, 125mm and 135mm. No fall off whatsoever so ever when going wider.

I picked up the 135mm 5.6. Back home the 135mm has a much bigger spread of the brightness compared to my 150mm. Weird.

Today shows I need to shoot and practice more.

It is about familiarity, also confidence. We have to realise that most LF lenses are relatively slow, f4.5, f5.6, f6.8. f8, and I do have f12.5, f14, f16 lenses. When you add an f3 8"or f3.5 6" lens (I have both) you realise we are using slow lenses for LF., and they are more difficult to focus.

I do wonder, I have early Ross f14 EWA lenses for British Field cameras, and some other f16 WA lenses,he original screens were coarse and 2 stops dimmer, maybe we are impatient, just how long would you hide under a dark-cloth until your eyes acclimatised.

Very true Ian.

Hp5 and fp4 is very familiar to me and gives me confidence. I like what I’ve seen with fomapan but im not able to get consistent results so lack I lack confidence. I see it’s potential though. You have listed your times in Pyro hd. Thinking of getting some to see how I like the developer with fomapan and also hp5.

About twenty minutes for eyes to adapt fully. Try it in the darkroom. All sorts of little chinks of light can show themselves. They will do no harm. Clearly twenty minutes is a bit impractical as a working method. Everybody has to devise some kind of compromise. A tilting loupe can help with focusing at the edges, but they do seem to be remarkably expensive.

I’ve got one of the 6x Silvestri tiling loupes and it is indeed really great for focussing with wide lenses and/or when lens tilt is applied. Its actually easier to use with the little flat tilting base bit removed (this part serves no purpose functionally) at which point it becomes evident you could probably modify ANY loupe that has a plastic base by just sawing off part of the base at 45deg up to the midpoint line, and basically get the same end result.
