Good dealers are important.

Years ago I rented a unit in the same complex (an old women's prison) as Leeds Cameras, they almost always had the Agfa films & papers I used on the shelf, as well as Rodinal. They merged and it was not the same, however I still occasionally bump into one of their old salesman, it turned out I was their only customer (in Birmingham) using Agfa film & paper, and they restocked after each purchase.

When I had a major exhibition in the mid 1990s they sponsored me by providing paper at their cost price, a significant saving.

It's sadly an international phenomenon. Outside New York and Los Angeles (where there are still a few full service shops) very few photography stores of any scale exist in the rest of the US. I am fortunate to live near a couple of independent small operators making their living flogging used digital and some analogue on eBay. I try to give them my trade for consumables, especially when I am able.

Its hard these days because the camera supply market is pretty much owned by adorama and bh photo in the states. Photo warehouse too. I know there are a cople of others online, but they have prices so much out of tune with everyone else, why bother?

bought a bottle of ilfotec HC for 85$ Everyone else wanted 95-110 for it... What a world... I spent 10.58 for a 1 litre pack of ID-11. Everyone else wanted 16-23 for it...

I found that mixing my own developer has been: A) Very economical B) Given me the freedom to explore different development disciplines more easily.

If you like ID-11, the formulae for D-76 or something very close to it is widely available. For the cost of some bulk chemicals, and protective breathing mask, a scale, and some distilled water, you can blend your own!

These days, I pretty much stick with Pyrocat-HD, PMK Pyro (which I have yet to mix myself, but will in all probability), and D-23 (which is remarkably versatile).

I have a fair bit of HC-110, DK-50, and D-76 stashed here but I almost never use it.

If you can find the 5 litre box of ID-11 it's usually cheaper than 2 x 1 litre boxes.
