New developing kit for 5x4

FWIW, I read somewhere that someone is coming out with a MOD54-type 3D printed 5x4 reel that will fit into a Paterson tank. Sorry, don't remember anything more than that about it.

That looks like it holds two sheets of film, one under each of the separable black retaining parts. If so, I'd have a couple of concerns.

First, pertinent to your last sentence, the tank would require a lot of solution for inversion agitation. Only replenishment seems like an economical approach. Second, if rotary agitation is attempted, there would be much turbulence as solution flowed around the retaining parts.

Were I new to 4x5 sheet film developing, I'd pay the piper for a Jobo 3006 Expert drum. Even without a Jobo processor, using that manually in conjunction with a plastic transmission fluid funnel/gooseneck is likely to give far more even results.

Sal,
Yes, it looked like two sheets. Perhaps four could be accommodated in extremis, back to back. I've neither seen nor handled one, so I can't say. This was purely for members' information. It looked useful for the occasional user and as if it might be easy to load, which seems to be a particular terror for beginners.
The capacity of the tank, generally quoted as "maximum capacity" by suppliers, is 650ml and this might be much the same as we'd use to tray-process two 5x4 films. Replenishment would be cheaper, but also more trouble. I don't think the makers suggest rotary agitation and neither would I.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. The Jobo is magnificent, but we have Yorkshiremen on this forum (including me) and you can get a lot of developer for £450. Would a beginner spend this? It might be more than they had paid for the camera.

The Jobo Expert Drum is wonderful...I use one on my CPP-2. However, great as it is you're stuck with one development technique--rotary. If you want to work with, say, minimal, extreme minimal, or stand development? Well...

650ml of solution doesn't seem all that bad to me. I regularly use a B&W King 5x4 tank for up to 10 sheets of film that requires 1,050ml. I won't even mention my tanks & hangers! ;) Developers such as Pyrocat-HD, HC-110, and Rodinal are pretty reasonable cost-wise in these greater quantities IMO.

Alan,
I may be a deeply insensitive Philistine, but I've never looked at any picture and wondered how much developer was used.
The B+W King looks impressive too.

:D Not at all, sir. My point was that 650ml of solution ain't much to my mind...

My own thought, too. We almost certainly use more petrol than developer.

The first one holds 6 sheets same as the original jodo holder.

The second one holds 8 sheets.

And jobo assumes that you use the rotation method. So you need only around 300 ml fluid for development.

Both looks a better loading method than the dreadful jobo.

Next on the list to print. [emoji4]
