Auschwitz

Years ago, I visited Dachau and photographed there. But the place is so haunting and sad, it took me several decades to bring myself to print the images. It's good we preserve these things as the reminders of horror, but they must never be easy to see.

I was able to go Auschwitz before Covid. A truly unique museum. I think the Russians were right to keep it in its entirety. Sadly, as a species, we never learnt from its horrors. Whilst in the Balkans we came across a couple of POW camps which were borderline 'Death Camps'
Cheers, Diz

What's really stunning is that the Jewish Holocaust was the 4th worst genocide of the 20th century. In order they were: Mao's 40-50MChinese victims, Stalin's similarly 30-40M Russians, Stalin's genocide of the Ukranians in the 1930s (the Holodomor) which is something like 15M-ish, and then Hitler's purges of the Jews at 6M. Either Stalin or Mao by themselves eclipse all the religious wars, Crusades, Inquisition in the Western world in all history combined.

The one sense in which the Holocaust was the absolute worst was in the percentage of European Jews that were killed. On a per capita basis, I don't think anyone ever did anything quite this evil.

Although it’s a doleful thought, thank you for this reminder.
