Hello all
I'm off to the Alps later this week and will be taking a light 5x4 kit and it recently dawned on me it might be a good chance to try out some IR photography. I have a R72 filter I bought years ago and never used for some reason or other. Anyway, I bought a few 120 rolls of Rollei Infrared to use in my 6x12 back and yesterday I shot a quick test roll just to get an idea of any development or metering issues I might need to iron out.
The IR side of things looks fine, exposures were OK but the entire film seems to have a uniform specking all over, through the dark and light areas, These are clearly visible as dark spots under a loupe, and of course visible as light spots on the scans. I don't think this is 'film grain', it looks like something different to me, so just wondering if anyone else here as used this film (or it's similar derivitive products all cut from big rolls of Aviphot 200) to confirm this is not 'normal'. I developed in Pyrocat HD with a water stop bath, a pre-soak, and Ilford Rapid Fix, manual inversion. Scans a 300dpi Imacon scans. I've attached a 100% crop.
As it looks different to grain I'd be inclined to say this is some reaction with the backing paper, similar to what is known to have happened with various Ilford stocks over the years. This Rollei Infrared stuff is, as far as I can tell, the old Agfa stock which is cut, rolled and packaged by Ilford. The expiry date on the film is 2029, "made in the UK", and since I received it on friday it has not been either in or out of a fridge.
I've shot a small amount of this film before in 10x8 (as Aviphot 200) and 35mm (as Rollei Retro 400s) and I don't remember seeing this sort of thing on it.
I'd be interested to hear thoughts from anyone who has used this film or any of it's clones ( Superpan200 / Retro 400s / Aviphot 200).
