I just picked up a few bits and bobs at auction and in one of my lots there is something called gaslight paper. Apparently you did not need a darkroom to use it, you just put the negative on the paper and held it near the gaslight till you got the image you wanted.

Anyone ever experimented with it? Know much about it, like when it may have been in use? Gaslight suggests early 20th century or 2006 in Hartlepool ;)

I am finding the historical cornucopia of papers and techniques and chemistry absolutely fascinating.

“… an inch of magnesium ribbon.” Not come across that before. Very interesting.
The general idea was that the paper was quite insensitive and could be used with the gas flame turned down low and printed with it turned up higher.
As it’s a contact process, I’m wondering if it could be inspected by opening half the frame. Not possible with modern developed-out papers of course. I’m hoping that other members know more.

Magnesium ribbon and gaslight! Interesting combination indeed, David :D

It may just turn out to be one of those 'suck it and see' projects. I'll let you know when ti arrives.
