Interesting. Do the six winners really each get a Chamonix, an Arca-Swiss and a Jobo processor? It's a magnificent prize.
I note that if you win, they want your negative, not just as evidence (which seems reasonable) but to produce publicity material too.
Interesting too, that Job are now selling Chamonix cameras. There's a very nice lightweight non-folder, max extension 300mm...
I wonder if they'd accept a silver print by Ilford from a scanned neg?
I do wonder whether it's really about promoting large format or simply a promotion of their products. It seems odd to me to offer a prize of an LF camera to a photographer who already has one; I certainly wouldn't swap my present camera for what they're offering.
I saw this elsewhere, and I think it's a very welcome development for photographers working with film and traditional materials. I have a good 4x5 camera, but the Chamonix would give me additional scope for getting out and about. The other parts of the prize are also very good. I will be doing my best to produce an entry. Anyone who wins, and doesn't fancy the prize could send it along to me [emoji3]
Alex.
I suppose it must be intended to promote Jobo products, although they are very liberal in not insisting that their own products are used. Other manufacturers' competitions have been more restrictive. Their business is very much involved with the film-using community and the LF cohort is arguably the peak of that community, so this should generate some symbiosis. (I suspect the Leica cohort may dispute this.)
Joanna,
I believe you already own the most luxurious field camera ever produced, but others are less lucky. It seemed like a desirable prize to me. Can anyone have too many cameras, anyway?
It's important to promote traditional darkroom printing in this day ans age so it's an excellent competition, I'd happily accept a Chamonix camera, having handled one they are very nicely made.
Would be nice to see more darkroom materials as prizes though.
I've had a look at a website: https://www.jobo.com/ecms.php?ecms_lang=EN
They list film from Ilford, Kodak and Fuji, but no printing material. Their involvement with Chamonix seems to date from 2016. I think that they had been in trouble a while back so presumably this is their phoenix moment. If this competition is a success and repeated (annually?) it could become the Booker Prize of LF photography. We shall see.
On another tack, their LensTrue system seems to provide auto-correction of perspective by recording the position of a digital camera at the time of taking.
Hi all
better than most Photo comps, you retain the rights to your image that's a + in my book!
I'm sure I'm not competition worthy but will inspire me to get out there more and explore how I can interpret my visions. I'd be happy with any prize!
Support for film/ analog printing needs support lets keep the magic alive!
For those without an enlarger or darkroom there's always darkroom access through Ilfords Local Darkroom scheme. There's participants through out the UK and Europe as well as America etc.
