    First contact print

I'm pleased you find the picture evocative of a "cold winter's day in England" Alan, because that's pretty much what it was. It was taken just a couple of weeks ago during the time of year I prefer to be out. This area is very green and overgrown during summer months, when the shapes of trees...

    First contact print

This is a half plate contact print of a section of the River Leen near Papplewick. The film was 60-70 years old Kodak Super-xx, hence the uneven exposure. The sky was very overcast, so I had to print at grade 5 to get enough overall contrast. If I was to make another copy I would probably try...

    70 year old film

Does anyone else use expired film? I’ve just made a test negative of expired Kodak Super-xx half plate film. I’m guessing that it could be up to 70 years old due to reference on the box to the war-time packaging. Apparently this was made in sheet form from around 1940 until 1992. From...

Thanks for the tips David M I'll bare them in mind next time, especially 2B - something I've already experienced :).

Thanks for the comments, they're much appreciated. I think plenty of practice with the different camera movements is in order.

    First negative.

I’ve just exposed and then tray processed my first proper 5×7 large format film negative. I must admit that I found it strange working in complete darkness, and got a bit disorientated even though I’d had a couple of dry runs: just couldn’t find things. For a first attempt I’m reasonably...

    First attempts

What Stephen says is correct: I have a custom made back that will take both 5x7" and 6½x4¾" film holders, as the more modern plastic ones are the same external dimensions. I have to contact print these as my enlarger only holds up to 6x9 medium format.

    First attempts

I don't know if this is allowed as it’s not a large format negative, so please let me know if it’s not. The still life shot was taken with my 6½x4¾ Toyo field camera with a 6×9 medium format back that I've just finished modifying to fit. It was basically taken to test if there were any light...

    Hi from Nottinghamshire.

Thanks for the welcome. Ian - I'm in Hucknall, roughly halfway between Mansfield and Nottingham.

    Hi from Nottinghamshire.

Hi everyone. I retired in 2015 and have just started with large format. I've used 35mm and medium format in the past and really enjoy the whole process of developing and traditional printing. I have a digital camera as well but never got satisfactory inkjet prints, hence reverting to the "old...
